- Equality and mutual respect: We do not distinguish between members based on nationality, gender, background, or other personal attributes, and we treat everyone as an equal scientist and colleague. We respect differences in experience, perspectives, and values. Criticism and discussion of ideas are welcome, but attacks on people based on those differences are not tolerated.
- Safety first: We place the highest priority on physical and psychological safety. We aim to create a research environment where everyone can work, speak up, and ask for help without fear.
- Autonomy, responsibility, and initiative:
- We welcome research proposals based on independent and creative thinking. At the same time, greater autonomy comes with greater responsibility for one’s own decisions, actions, and research, as well as accountability for explaining them.
- When you receive opinions or advice from others, we encourage you to first accept them openly and actually try them. At the same time, simply doing what you are told is not enough; having your own ideas is essential. Look several steps ahead toward your own goals, and when necessary, we also welcome reasoned disagreement based on clear grounds.
- Think and act. Consult others immediately when needed. Being able to run this loop as quickly as possible is a major strength in moving research forward.
- Support one another and collaborate fairly: Ask for help when needed, and help those around you in return. If an experiment fails, a problem arises, or you are unsure how to proceed, share it as early as possible. Science does not move forward through individual effort alone. We recognize each person’s contributions and aim to ensure that contributions to research outcomes are evaluated fairly. We do not assign the same research topic to multiple members in order to make them compete within the lab.
- Fair opportunities and appropriate evaluation: We provide all members with fair opportunities to learn, take on challenges, and grow. Research outcomes depend on many factors beyond individual effort, including the nature and timing of a project, so we do not evaluate people solely by visible results. We also value day-to-day effort, initiative, responsibility, and contributions to others, and we aim to create an environment where these lead to further opportunities and broader future choices.
- Scientific integrity: We do not tolerate fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, or any other research misconduct or dishonest behavior that undermines scientific progress.
- Seek facts, not “good” data: The goal of research is not to obtain “good” data or expected results. Our goal is to build reliable and reproducible experimental systems and use them to understand what is actually happening. To achieve this, we continuously refine and standardize experimental protocols and clearly define procedures so that results can be reproduced across researchers and over time. We treat the results obtained from these systems as data and discuss them based on evidence rather than assumptions, expectations, or position. Unexpected and unplanned results are also important data.
- Protect information, communicate science: We prevent the leakage of confidential and unpublished information. At the same time, under appropriate PI oversight, we actively communicate research findings and scientific knowledge in a responsible manner.
*These policies have been shaped by the guidance of the mentors who have supported and taught me over the years, as well as by what I have learned through collaborations with many colleagues. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to them all.
